Prof. Dr. KH. Ali Yafie was born in Donggala, Central Sulawesi, on September 1, 1926, or 23 Safar 1345. At that time, the first NU Congress was being held. He was the third of five siblings, namely:
1. Kyai As’ad
2. Nyai Muzainah
3. KH. Ali Yafie
4. Nyai Manarussana
5. Nyai Amira
His father was Sheikh Muhammad Al-Yafie, and his mother was Imacayya, the daughter of a king from one of the kingdoms in Tanete on the western coast of South Sulawesi. According to Gus Helmi Ali, the son of Kyai Ali Yafie, Bu Imacayya passed away when Kyai Ali Yafie was 10 years old. His father later remarried to Tanawali, and they had four children:
